From the warmth of my Cabin.
The Culburra fishing
trip was the last Pairs Comp for the club this year. There was an excellent
turnout with over 30 people attending and 7 boats. Most people arrived at
Western Suburbs League’s Club fishing quarters on the Friday evening. The
accommodation was situated on at least a half acre block, close to the boat
ramp. It was built in 1964 & consisted of 3 cabins and a dormitory with
5 rooms of 8 beds an enormous kitchen, dining and family room. The place
was cossie with abundant furnishings for a large number of people. My first
impression was I had stepped on to the production set of “That 70’s show”
but that was the charm of the place.
After unpacking most headed for the local bowling club situated only 3km
away, which was modern and spacious with generous pokies before settling
in? Saturday saw the comp begin in earnest with several getting to
the ramp at sunrise. It was an Inside/ Outside fishing affair with gusting
winds and mounting seas testing the metal of the captains. Typical of the
south coast that time of year most boats fishing outside returned to the
ramp or safer waters by lunch time as the winds increased over 30 knots.
Notable events that occurred over the weekend included Mathew losing a trophy
snapper to a local seal, Ian’s car being plastered in pelican dung, Smacker
breaking his drought and finally catching fish along with the club catching
a whooping 65kg amongst the members. Congrats to the Berry clan for arranging
an excellent w/end big hugs Keith.
